“Lord of the Irish”

20 x 16 Acrylic on board

Another in the Fish Eye series completed in 2017. The Irish Lord, or as the local fisherman call them the “Bull Head” is an undesirable fish to catch with no commercial value and can be a problem in a gill net when their substantial long spines entangle and snarl all they touch. The spines will break the skin through rubber gloves and boots. The reference photo for this piece was taken by my daughter, Amber Koning, at the aquarium in the Kodiak Fisheries Research Facility on Near Island. The Bull Head displays a wide variety of colors when live. I’ve never tasted the meat of a Bull Head.
